The 7 Wonders app appeared in November after years of anticipation, delays, and testing … and it was worth the wait. 7 Wonders itself is one of the best board games we’ve seen because it condenses the city-building theme into a consistent 30-minute playing time. Each player gets a hand of seven cards per round, plays one, and then passes the remaining cards to the next player, who selects one from his or her hand and passes the remainder around … so that everyone plays six cards per round (discarding one), but the cards you get to choose from keep changing as the hands move around the table. You do this three times, playing 18 cards, building a little engine that gives you the resources and coins you’ll need to play more buildings or complete your Wonder. There are lots of ways to score, so part of the game is finding a path to points that your opponents aren’t following. Moves are simultaneous, so solo games fly by on the app, although it can be tough to follow what all opponents are doing, AI or real, if you’re playing against more than three other players. The developer just added the Leaders expansion as a $1.99 in-app purchase. It’s a tremendous game that finally got the app it deserved.

Valve assembly/installation. One of the most important parts of maintenance is proper assembly during the diaphragm change-out process. If the valve is not assembled properly, it can leave room for batch contamination, poor valve performance, and short lifecycle. Proper diaphragm installation per manufacturer’s instructions is essential. If installed improperly, excessive force during operation can result in diaphragm damage. Fluids can then pass through the closed valve or, in the worst case, cause catastrophic failure that results in process fluid contamination and leaks. Torquing and retorquing are also important steps in the  assembly process that can often lead to seal failure, by either making the seal too tight or too loose for proper performance.

In the medical field, VR technologies that enable surgeons to “reach out and touch the virtual world” have an established track record: Several studies have shown that VR-trained surgeons complete surgical procedures faster, with significantly lower error rates (30). However, the use of VR in surgical contexts, where it is intended to simulate a surgeon’s experience of manipulating human tissue, is rather distinct from the use of VR to manipulate molecular structure and dynamics. Whereas surgical applications have a well-defined and measurable design reference (that is, how does the VR simulation “feel” compared to an experience involving human tissue?), molecular applications have no similarly well-defined design reference (that is, what does a molecular system feel like?). This lack of reference is what makes developing a real-time molecular simulation and manipulation framework such a fascinating challenge, which must necessarily consider aesthetics, design, and user psychology to be effective. The lack of design reference also highlights the arbitrariness of tangible (for example, plastic or metal) molecular models.
