Before starting on a platform, participants were given the buckminsterfullerene task (see the “Buckminsterfullerene task” section for details) to familiarize themselves with the feel of the molecular interaction on a given platform. Once participants indicated to the study facilitators that they had a sufficient level of familiarity, they were moved onto the nanotube/methane task (see the “Nanotube/methane task” section for details). Study facilitators moved a participant onto the helicene task if they either managed to accomplish the nanotube task or time expired (see the “Helicene task” section for details). Once the user had attempted both tasks, the process was repeated on the next platform until the participant had tried the task on all three platforms. Other factors that affect valve performance and maintenance include the amount of exposure time to liquids and steams, the type of diaphragm (one-piece vs. two piece diaphragm), and the thermal cycle (the swings between minimum and maximum temperature). Diaphragms and other soft parts, such as gaskets and o-rings, often face fluctuations between steam sterilization and cold-processing temperatures in the biopharmaceutical industry. A typical valve undergoes hundreds of thermal cycles in its maintenance lifecycle, which can affect the valve seal and ultimately the product. As thermal cycles increase, the valve diaphragm is continually being compressed and relaxed, resulting in thinning of the diaphragm. These dimensional changes create less seal contact and will eventually result in valve leakage to the atmosphere.  Although some leaks can be addressed with re-torquing, most end-user procedures do not allow valves to be re-torqued after the process has been released to production.

“Currier’s sculpture is both a study in balance and an invitation to discovery,” said Nancy Weekly, exhibition curator. As she has stated, her Anamorphosis series reflects, “the interplay of masses and voids. Absence and presence, light and shadow, stasis and motion are subject matter. The dimensional tension and dynamics of human figures found in Greek and Buddhist temple pediments, and most recently, the structural flatness and synthesis of planar shapes in Cubist still-life paintings intrigue me.”

Although the ensemble cast enjoys a seasoned pedigree that reads like a late-night summer festival all-star jam, this fledgling “nu-sion” project is growing a unique and rabid following by commanding audiences at theaters, clubs, and major national festivals since 2012.

The exhibition is fittingly presented in the Sylvia L. Rosen Gallery for Fine Art in Craft Media, named for the Burchfield Penney’s patron whose generous support makes the biennial exhibition possible, as well as collection development. Past recipients of the Langley H. Kenzie Award include Bethany Krull (2010), Karen Donnellan (2012), Jesse Walp (2014), and Jozef Bajus (2016), who respectively work with ceramics, glass, wood, and fiber with recycled materials.
