The Burchfield Penney Langley H. Kenzie Award was created to honor Mrs. Kenzie’s dedication as an artist and to support others like her. It recognizes an outstanding artist from the biennial, juried exhibition, Art in Craft Media, by granting the recipient a solo exhibition in the following year. The award is supported by the Langley H. Kenzie Award Endowment, established by her daughters, Rachel King and Mary Mahley.
The 7 Wonders app appeared in November after years of anticipation, delays, and testing … and it was worth the wait. 7 Wonders itself is one of the best board games we’ve seen because it condenses the city-building theme into a consistent 30-minute playing time. Each player gets a hand of seven cards per round, plays one, and then passes the remaining cards to the next player, who selects one from his or her hand and passes the remainder around … so that everyone plays six cards per round (discarding one), but the cards you get to choose from keep changing as the hands move around the table. You do this three times, playing 18 cards, building a little engine that gives you the resources and coins you’ll need to play more buildings or complete your Wonder. There are lots of ways to score, so part of the game is finding a path to points that your opponents aren’t following. Moves are simultaneous, so solo games fly by on the app, although it can be tough to follow what all opponents are doing, AI or real, if you’re playing against more than three other players. The developer just added the Leaders expansion as a $1.99 in-app purchase. It’s a tremendous game that finally got the app it deserved.

Moving forward, there are a range of related domains that we intend to explore. For example, we aim to better understand how changes in simulation parameters (for example, force strength, MD timestep, simulation temperature, holonomic constraints, and rendering options) affect the ability of users to intuitively accomplish molecular tasks and furnish meaningful microscopic insight. We are interested in designing analytical methods that can be combined within interactive sampling strategies so that mechanistic observables (for example, free energies, barrier heights, and conformational probabilities) can be extracted from VR simulations. We are also exploring the extent to which other sensory modalities (for example, sound) might be engaged to provide additional information within a real-time immersive simulation environment (42). As we explore the potential of VR across both molecular mechanics–based and quantum mechanics–based simulations and study its ability to enable specialists and nonspecialists alike to better understand and more efficiently manipulate complex data, we look forward to understanding how it may be used to advance molecular science in a range of research, communication, and educational contexts.
