The artist creates aggregates of language as well as categories and styles of art making. The text is the most stimulating example of this combination – Zaman has formed his own written language, a combination of his native Bengali, Arabic, and English. Graffiti meets fine art and Eastern alphabets meets Western alphabets. Each separate element merges to create stunning layered depths.

Everything at Russell’s Bakery is made by hand, naturally. Otherwise he wouldn’t call it artisanal and price a baguette at 10 shekels ($2.85) and a round loaf at 19 shekels ($5.40). Here, unlike at factory-type bakeries elsewhere in town, the only machines are those the doughs get mixed in. Additives? No way, just flour, salt, yeast, and purified water, and sometimes fruit or nuts. The wheat originates in Canada, Turkey, and Russia, but mainly in the U.S., the smallest portion originating in-country and only it needing to be grown in fields given sabbaticals if Russell is to hold on to his kashrut certificate. His imported wheat comes by ship into Haifa and is milled and bagged there. Whiteners? Bleach? No, disgusting. Preservatives? Perish the thought. And no processed salt, either, only the unprocessed Red Sea variety rich in minerals and flavorful.

Drawing some inspiration from nature’s palette observed from her Allegany County home and studio, Currier creates surfaces reminiscent of mottled boulders, slate and rust, as well as intangible fog.

Anne Currier is a sculptor whose medium is ceramic, and she is the recipient of the 2018 Langley H. Kenzie Award which entitles her to a solo exhibition. In Display, Currier will present sculpture from her Anamorphosis series, plus a new collection of wall-mounted sculptures created specifically for the exhibition, and an installation of tile panels designed this year in collaboration with Boston Valley Terra Cotta in Orchard Park, New York. Opening October 12, 2018 at the Burchfield Penney Art Center at SUNY Buffalo State as part of the museum’s M&T Bank Second Friday event, the exhibition will remain on view through Sunday, March 31, 2019.

Beginning in 2009, Currier has collaborated with Boston Valley Terra Cotta to create unique ceramic tiles for interior walls. Her first commission, La Stanza di Linea, is a 14 x 40-foot wall in the Choral Room in the Miller Performing Arts Center at Alfred University. Incorporating three different tiles to create the pattern, the tiles were mounted to the wall utilizing Boston Valley’s unique clip system. Next, BKSK, the architectural firm that designed 688 Broadway, a 14-unit luxury apartment building in New York City’s NOHO neighborhood, chose one of Currier’s Boston Valley Terra Cotta tiles for installation in the entryway.

Three years they’ve been together, during which she’s become, no bones about it, thirty-one years of age. Childless, but not to worry. Her ponytail glossy, and yes, even in today’s increasingly religious Jerusalem you can have children without marrying. And so Hadar lives not unhappily in the present, enjoying life with her boyfriend, enjoying the city, enjoying reading, enjoying writing poetry, enjoying making bread.

The gig economy, for as much attention as it’s getting in 2018, isn’t new. Newsboys in the late 1800s, your dog walker, the temporary receptionist at your office: Today the government would qualify all of them as having so-called “alternative work arrangements.” What’s changed in the 21st century is technology. The ease of connecting and the ability to work from anywhere, combined with millennials’ push for elastic hours and a better work-life balance, have brought gig work into the mainstream and provided frustrated cube-dwellers with an outlet for making a paycheck, despite the baked-in instability, the frustrating lack of benefits, and the absence of typical workplace protections.
