Zaman’s practice stems from a desire to bring different, and at times socially opposing, cultures together to highlight the beauty in each, and to call to attention a need for understanding. Oddly enough this is communicated via language that isn’t understandable, but that exact illegibility is what helps create a universal experience. Unable to read the text, the viewer is left to contemplate the intent of the artist and to glean meaning by focusing on the layers, both in the form of monochromatic and colorful applications of paint. There is room for both intellectual reads and more instinctive responses.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Muhammad Z. Zaman is a Buffalo-based painter specializing in calligraphy and is a resident artist at Buffalo Arts Studio. This year, Zaman was selected as the Open Buffalo Emerging Artist and was also awarded a New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Individual Artist Grant. Zaman has participated in many community-based initiatives, including Common Ground Connections, part of a nationwide interfaith campaign facilitating bringing communities together through the arts.

Their debut live album, After the Parade, cracked four Billboard Country and Heatseeker charts in 2018, and a newly recorded album is on the way. Always good for a draw, Dalton & The Sheriffs have been chosen to open for artists such as Sam Hunt, Lee Brice and Old Dominion, and the band has earned their own fervent headline following throughout New England. In addition to packing them in at prestigious venues like Paradise Rock Club and the House of Blues, Dalton and the Sheriffs quickly sold out four sets in one fall Nashville weekend, and 2019 will see this tremendous live band expand their fan base coast to coast.

“Much of my work is derived from human interaction. Imagine making an impression in the sand from sitting on the beach, getting up and seeing the residual shape formed,” describes Currier. “I also remember being inspired watching a couple do Tai Chi, intrigued by the physical call and response of their hand gestures.”

About Anne Currier Anne Currier received her B.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute, Chicago and her M.F.A. from the University of Washington, Seattle. Ms. Currier has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts and the Virginia A. Groot Foundation. She was honored with the American Crafts Council College of Fellows career achievement award.

Professor emerita of Ceramic Art at Alfred University, the number one ranked ceramic art Master’s program in the country by U.S. News and World Report, Currier was recently named first-place recipient of a 2017 Virginia A. Groot Foundation Grant. Her sculptures are represented in numerous private and public collections, which include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City; Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution; Daum Museum of Contemporary Art in Sedalia, Missouri; Musée des Arts Decoratifs de Montréal; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Kyung-ju, South Korea; and Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia.

Earlier this year, the Poloncarz administration went back to the county legislature seeking additional funding to study additional sites and explore in more detail the size and amenities needed to compete with other markets like Charlotte, but was turned down. That could prove problematic for the integrity of the study, presumably intended to be comprehensive. Also problematic was the lack of any opportunity for community input while the study was underway, an unfortunate characteristic it shares with the ECC facilities study of 2012.
