The exhibition is fittingly presented in the Sylvia L. Rosen Gallery for Fine Art in Craft Media, named for the Burchfield Penney’s patron whose generous support makes the biennial exhibition possible, as well as collection development. Past recipients of the Langley H. Kenzie Award include Bethany Krull (2010), Karen Donnellan (2012), Jesse Walp (2014), and Jozef Bajus (2016), who respectively work with ceramics, glass, wood, and fiber with recycled materials.
Proud to be firmly installed in the new-funk movement, KUNG FU is quickly popularizing their unique sonic contribution, blurring the line between intense electro-fusion, and blistering dance arrangements. Making fusion music “cool” again, the band draws on influences such as early Headhunters and Weather Report, and merges those ideas with a contemporary EDM informed sensibility. Imagine 70’s funk-fusion meets a modern dance party!
Another game with beautiful artwork and animations, Lanterns is a tile-placement game with a clever scoring twist: Every time you place a square lantern tile, you gain a token of the color facing you … and each opponent gets a token of the color facing him or her. You gain a second token if you matched the edge of the tile you placed to the edge it’s touching on the board. You trade in tokens in sets for points, but the point bonuses for these — one of each of the seven colors, four of a kind, or three pair — decrease over the course of the game. It’s over quick, and since you can’t control your tile draws, your strategy is really turn by turn.
“Display, the title of the exhibition, echoes the context or intent of an object and how it can shift when placed in varying spaces; but it’s really all one display,” says Anne Currier. “Showing my work as the Langley H. Kenzie Award recipient is part of a series of year-long positive coincidences. The Burchfield Penney’s support of craft-based media, exhibiting in its Sylvia L. Rosen Gallery and earning a collaborative grant to design tile walls with Boston Valley Terra Cotta is a confluence that transformed 2017 into a miracle for me.”

KwikVet positions itself as an alternative to mobile veterinarians who make calls in a truck or van stocked like a clinic on wheels, which requires a lot of capital investment. (Some mobile veterinarians travel more lightly, however.) Still, KwikVet practitioners use their own cars and phones, and carry their own liability, health and car insurance. The company provides essential supplies to treat common conditions, including digestive upset; parasites; skin, ear and eye ailments; allergies; diabetes; arthritis; and behavior issues. They also administer vaccinations.
She balks at the notion that the veterinarians will be salespeople for specific products. “I don’t feel any pressure to get rid of stock from Company A,” she said. “My main concern is efficacy. I make sure what I’m recommending is a base plan I am just as likely to recommend from a brick-and-mortar clinic.”
Drawing some inspiration from nature’s palette observed from her Allegany County home and studio, Currier creates surfaces reminiscent of mottled boulders, slate and rust, as well as intangible fog.

“Much of my work is derived from human interaction. Imagine making an impression in the sand from sitting on the beach, getting up and seeing the residual shape formed,” describes Currier. “I also remember being inspired watching a couple do Tai Chi, intrigued by the physical call and response of their hand gestures.”
