Neighborhood residents have been reluctant to talk publicly about the situation, but two women who identified themselves as Rivers Edge residents spoke up during the community meeting. Both said the feeling of unease is palpable in the housing development.

As one of the region’s most read publications since its launch in 2004, Buffalo Rising’s diverse editorial team delivers a wide range of relevant content to our readers as it unfolds in real time. An independently owned and operated digital publication, Buffalo Rising provides editorial and critical reviews on all topics that relate to Buffalo, NY.

Display has been curated by Nancy Weekly, Burchfield Scholar, Head of Collections & Charles Cary Rumsey Curator at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, and Burchfield Penney Instructor of Museum Studies at SUNY Buffalo State.

Yes, in three days it’ll be Easter and in two days Passover 2018—or 5778 by the Jewish reckoning, i.e., since God created heaven, earth, and the hill in Jerusalem now defaced by the gargantuan Holyland project where apartments commanding no-doubt-breathtaking views go for millions of dollars, and half of which Russell understands are owned by people from abroad who use them for a week or two yearly or by speculators who flip them.

From the Lyft and Uber drivers zipping along our thoroughfares to neighboring homes morphing into Airbnb rentals to a vibrant startup culture that inspired Amazon to rank Colorado fourth on a list of the top 10 states for entrepreneurial-ness, the gig economy seems to be everywhere in the Centennial State. That really shouldn’t be a surprise: The flexibility associated with gig work fits snugly with our lifestyle, a spontaneous, get-outside-whenever-you-can, work-to-live-don’t-live-to-work modus vivendi that’s recently drawn so many transplants inside our rectangular borders. It wouldn’t be far-fetched, then, for the typical 9-to-5er, procrastinating in a cube in an office tower downtown, to feel that everyone else is living—and loving—the gig life.

“Much of my work is derived from human interaction. Imagine making an impression in the sand from sitting on the beach, getting up and seeing the residual shape formed,” describes Currier. “I also remember being inspired watching a couple do Tai Chi, intrigued by the physical call and response of their hand gestures.”

Currier’s latest tiles, designed in eight variations, will be displayed in public for the first time on two free-standing walls in the Burchfield Penney exhibition. She utilized both wheel-thrown and hand-built techniques to create undulating waves, articulated in both positive and negative profiles, and coated with uniquely formulated glazes that accentuate the rise and fall in the tiles’ surfaces. One is a semi-opaque iridescent satin white; the other is an opaque charcoal satin that breaks with a bronze sheen.

This talk takes place during a public exhibition opening for We the People: New Art from the Collection. A Members’ opening for the exhibition will precede the talk, from 5 to 7 pm.

Most of the migratory birds that fly through our region are flying by night, navigating with the night sky (note – if you need a good read, “Living on the Wind” by Scott Weidensaul takes a fascinating look at bird migration). Bright artificial lights not only cause direct window strikes, they disorient and fatigue surviving birds, making them vulnerable to other threats. You can make a difference by turning out your lights at home, and encouraging the managers of your place of work or residential community to do the same. Exterior lights and flood lights, interior lights on higher floors are most harmful. It’s also good practice to fully shield exterior lighting so that it is downward facing. Taking these steps during spring and fall migrations, from March – June and August – November drastically reduces light-related bird fatalities.

“Currier’s sculpture is both a study in balance and an invitation to discovery,” said Nancy Weekly, exhibition curator. As she has stated, her Anamorphosis series reflects, “the interplay of masses and voids. Absence and presence, light and shadow, stasis and motion are subject matter. The dimensional tension and dynamics of human figures found in Greek and Buddhist temple pediments, and most recently, the structural flatness and synthesis of planar shapes in Cubist still-life paintings intrigue me.”
