Beginning in 2009, Currier has collaborated with Boston Valley Terra Cotta to create unique ceramic tiles for interior walls. Her first commission, La Stanza di Linea, is a 14 x 40-foot wall in the Choral Room in the Miller Performing Arts Center at Alfred University. Incorporating three different tiles to create the pattern, the tiles were mounted to the wall utilizing Boston Valley’s unique clip system. Next, BKSK, the architectural firm that designed 688 Broadway, a 14-unit luxury apartment building in New York City’s NOHO neighborhood, chose one of Currier’s Boston Valley Terra Cotta tiles for installation in the entryway.
The Burchfield Penney Langley H. Kenzie Award was created to honor Mrs. Kenzie’s dedication as an artist and to support others like her. It recognizes an outstanding artist from the biennial, juried exhibition, Art in Craft Media, by granting the recipient a solo exhibition in the following year. The award is supported by the Langley H. Kenzie Award Endowment, established by her daughters, Rachel King and Mary Mahley.
In recent years, the design of the hygienic diaphragm valve has been optimized to increase productivity, ultimately advancing maintenance practices in biopharmaceutical facilities. New valve technology, for example, can reduce average diaphragm replacement time from 23 minutes to three minutes and total maintenance time from hundreds of man hours to just a few hours, hence reducing maintenance cost by more than 90% (2). Preventative maintenance practices and more innovative technology, such as valves that do not require tools or retorquing, are preventing the potential of human error and making processes safer and more efficient. Improved designs can help meet the biopharmaceutical industry’s growing demand for increased productivity, extended maintenance intervals, and reduced operating costs, in conjunction with an effective preventative maintenance program.
An essential question is whether co-located interaction of the sort enabled by VR affords any real advantage in accelerating complex 3D manipulation tasks compared to more conventional interaction technologies. The application of interest, in this case is molecular modeling. To tackle this question, we exploited the fact that the Fig. 1 framework runs on a wide range of different client interaction hardware, including mice (connected to personal computers/laptops) and tablets. Both are extremely familiar interfaces: the former offering non–co-located interaction, and the latter offering co-located interaction in 2D. We designed three specific tasks (Fig. 2 and movie S1) for users to carry out and compared the rates of task accomplishment across different interaction hardware. Each task involves an increasingly complicated choreography: (i) guiding a methane molecule (CH4) through a carbon nanotube, (ii) changing the screw sense of an organic helicene molecule, and (iii) tying a knot in a small polypeptide [17-alanine (17-ALA)]. Each task represents a class of dynamics that is important across natural and engineered nanosystems. For example, nanopores are ubiquitous across bio/materials chemistry (37), induced changes in molecular helicity offer a strategy for synthetic biologists to transmit chemical messages (38), and protein knots are associated with neurodegenerative diseases (39). To control for variations in the graphics and computational capabilities of different interaction hardware, each interaction platform used the same renderer and the same back-end MD simulation engine. The Supplementary Materials include details on the simulation setups, along with instructions enabling readers to use the executables at isci.itch.io/nsb-imd to initialize a cloud-based interactive simulation instance so that they can attempt the Fig. 2 tasks on any of the three interaction platforms.
Both ventures were artistic outlets for Blais and a way for her to connect with the local creative community outside of her job as a marketer; she wasn’t trying to make money (and her day job meant she didn’t need the extra income). She relied on apps such as Wunderlist and ColorNote to keep all of her proverbial balls in the air. “You have to be willing to put a lot of hours into it,” she says. Those would be evening hours and early morning hours and weekend hours, because as any side hustler knows, most of her income will continue to come from her full-time job—unless that side hustle starts paying some, if not all, of the bills.
