The Burchfield Penney is closed in celebration of New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
Dawn will spend the rest of its operational life in the target orbit, XMO7, and most future Dawn Journals will be devoted to it. How long will that be? That's a good question (in contrast, perhaps, to all the absurd questions posed in previous Dawn Journals), but the answer is not easy.
“Display, the title of the exhibition, echoes the context or intent of an object and how it can shift when placed in varying spaces; but it’s really all one display,” says Anne Currier. “Showing my work as the Langley H. Kenzie Award recipient is part of a series of year-long positive coincidences. The Burchfield Penney’s support of craft-based media, exhibiting in its Sylvia L. Rosen Gallery and earning a collaborative grant to design tile walls with Boston Valley Terra Cotta is a confluence that transformed 2017 into a miracle for me.”

(4) The first reeds, like GEM reeds, were made of stainless steel. These reeds were very durable and could be run a long time, but when they did break, the metal was sucked into the engine? destroying it. Eventually, epoxy-based glass fiber laminate (fiberglass) reeds were developed. Fiber reeds didn’t last as long as stainless steel, but when they started to fray, they didn’t cause catastrophic damage. Carbon fiber reeds are similar to glass fiber reeds, but they are a little lighter and stiffer at the same thickness. To achieve a compromise between lighter carbon and less expensive yet more durable glass fiber, a hybrid was developed. Manufacturers have experimented with other materials as well, including Kevlar and titanium.

The Burchfield Penney Langley H. Kenzie Award was created to honor Mrs. Kenzie’s dedication as an artist and to support others like her. It recognizes an outstanding artist from the biennial, juried exhibition, Art in Craft Media, by granting the recipient a solo exhibition in the following year. The award is supported by the Langley H. Kenzie Award Endowment, established by her daughters, Rachel King and Mary Mahley.
Propelled by the perfect combination of xenon ions, hydrazine rocket propellant and adrenaline, Dawn is on the verge of its most ambitious exploits yet. Having flawlessly completed its latest assignment to study Ceres, the veteran explorer is now aiming for a new low. Earlier today Dawn ignited ion engine #2 to start maneuvering to its lowest altitude above the dwarf planet. Soon the spaceship will be skimming closer to the alien landscapes of rock, ice and salt than ever before, promising exciting new insights into the nature of a distant and mysterious world.
Drawing some inspiration from nature’s palette observed from her Allegany County home and studio, Currier creates surfaces reminiscent of mottled boulders, slate and rust, as well as intangible fog.
