One of the all-time great Euro games, Puerto Rico is a high-strategy game with very little randomness or luck involved. You’re building out a colony by planting crops, constructing buildings, shipping goods either for money or points, and hiring colonists represented by … (squinting) little brown tokens. (That’s true in the physical game as well.) It’s a classic “engine builder,” where you set things up in your space to generate stuff each round, mostly trade goods you can ship for points, which is the optimal strategy unless everyone else is doing it, too. Beginning in 2009, Currier has collaborated with Boston Valley Terra Cotta to create unique ceramic tiles for interior walls. Her first commission, La Stanza di Linea, is a 14 x 40-foot wall in the Choral Room in the Miller Performing Arts Center at Alfred University. Incorporating three different tiles to create the pattern, the tiles were mounted to the wall utilizing Boston Valley’s unique clip system. Next, BKSK, the architectural firm that designed 688 Broadway, a 14-unit luxury apartment building in New York City’s NOHO neighborhood, chose one of Currier’s Boston Valley Terra Cotta tiles for installation in the entryway.

Some years ago, an associate told me his crew member was an ex-Marine. It gave me the idea to switch out part of my crew for stunt people, as what I was shooting was intense and a little dangerous. I had made the attempt with regular production crew but they all got white-eyed. Once I found the right combination of stunt crew, I realised we had a greater capacity – no weak links and higher proficiency of execution. From then on, I started manipulating the crew with various skill sets. Now, these last few years I’ve been playing with the idea of creating a crew of ex-special forces. For my shoots, efficiency and speed are key, behind the camera and in front.
